I did a fun experiment today: see how a timid cat like Keira react to catnip. Result: one looooooose kitteh!

Nina has a bald foot

Nina her right hind foot sole is bald! I discovered this when I took her inside this afternoon. For the past 2-3 days I hadn’t taken her in because it’s so cold outside and I don’t want to shock her with the heat inside, but today I kept the heat on low inside especially for her. Nina isn’t allowed to run in the garden like Miel because she doesn’t behave. She’s a digger. So about her foot: it’s bald and it looks red and chafed in places. Not healthy. I have made an appointment with the vet for her tomorrow evening, hopefully it’s nothing serious. Probably something similar like to what Miel had last summer. That was from a parasite on the skin. To be sure it wasn’t her dirty cage I just cleaned it. It was in need of cleaning anyway.

The weather is turning a lot cooler and Miel his fur is changing. He feels very soft but looks unkempt. I try to get the old, loose fur out but Miel doesn’t like it. If I try to long he tries for a nip.

Recently it’s been the human’s birthday and yesterday she received a late birthday gift: a crocheted Miel!!! Isn’t it the cutest!!!

Miel is changing into his winter fur, which is strangely enough turning out a brownish hue. I haven’t taken his picture yet. He is probably enjoying his last days of freedom outside. I don’t think I let him roam free in the winter. Nina and Keira are starting to get along. They spend time each evening when I bring Nina inside to play. So far it’s a show of mutual interest and reserve. Keira and Miel will be a more difficult match, since Keira is intimidated by Miel and Miel is to stupid to know that hissing isn’t a friendly gesture…

Keira felt at home really quickly. She loves and needs attention. This is a video I took in the evening (sorry that it turned out so dark) a few days ago.

A new addition to the family

We have a new addition to the family and Miel is flabbergasted at what the human has been thinking. Yes, I brought home a predator in a household of prey animals. Sorry, Miel but I think you have nothing to worry about. Indeed, the cat is scared of Miel.

Meet Keira, as I’m thinking of calling her:

Keira is a lilac British shorthair I adopted from a shelter. I have no idea what a breed-cat was doing in a shelter, or why the previous owners did her away. She’s underweight and was clearly stressed in the shelter where dogs were barking 24/7. She has a passport that says she’s born the 18th of September, 2006; so it’s almost her birthday. I’ll give her a treat then. But for her I think the biggest gift is being away from the shelter. She’s not sterilised yet, so that’ll happen soon. After that and when I’m sure she knows her home, she’ll be free to roam the garden (and hopefully she won’t leave the garden).

This is when she just got home. I opened the cage and let her decide when she wanted to come out. After 20 minutes she started exploring timidly.

She seems to favor this spot near the frontdoor. I have a cushion for her, but she’s ignoring that so far.

She feels safe in her scratching post. I don’t think she’s very playful, she ignored me rolling those little balls.

Miel isn’t scared of the cat, I think. He’s curious. The cat though is definitely afraid of Miel, there’s been hissing just now when Miel got to close.
